Investigate the difference between a count and a measure, and examine essential ideas such as unit iteration, partitioning, and the compensatory principle. Learn about the many uses of ratio in measurement and how scale models help us understand relative sizes. Investigate the constant of proportionality in isosceles right triangles, and learn about precision and accuracy in measurement.
The flapping of a butterfly's wings over Bermuda causes a rainstorm in Texas. Two sticks start side by side on the surface of a brook, only to follow divergent paths downstream. Both are examples of the phenomenon of chaos, characterized by a widely sensitive dependence of the future on slight changes in a system's initial conditions. This unit explores the mathematics of chaos, which involves the discovery of structure in what initially appears to be random, and imposes limits on predictability.
Look at place value systems based on numbers other than 10. Examine the base two numbers and learn uses for base two numbers in computers. Explore exponents and relate them to logarithms. Examine the use of scientific notation to represent numbers with very large or very small magnitude. Interpret whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals in base four.

Learn about the classifications of triangles, their different properties, and relationships between them. Examine concepts such as triangle inequality, triangle rigidity, and sidesideside congruence, and look at the conditions that cause them. Compare how these concepts apply to quadrilaterals. Explore properties of triangles and quadrilaterals through practical applications such as building structures.
Explore different ways of representing, analyzing, and interpreting data, including line plots, frequency tables, cumulative and relative frequency tables, and bar graphs. Learn how to use intervals to describe variation in data. Learn how to determine and understand the median.

This program is the first of 13 episodes on math skills for students preparing for the GED exam. As such, it covers general math-related topics the exam addresses, and helps students understand how the math portion of the exam is structured. The program consists of an in-studio host and video excerpts of GED students, instructors and testing experts offering their perspectives. Several tips are offered including rephrasing word problems so you understand what is being asked. Recognize the functions implied by the words sum, difference, product, and quotient. Students must demonstrate ability to work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals. They must know multiplication tables, recognize symbols such as square roots and exponents, solve basic equations, and set up problems without having to solve them. Math subject areas covered on exam include basic operations, measurements in geometry, data analysis and probability, and algebra. The program also shows key functions of calculator that is provided to test takers. Also covered is how to record answers for the 3 types of questions: multiple choice, charting on coordinate plane grid, and entering fractions and decimals.
